| Store Changes Name But Not Merchandise MT. HEALTHY – James Wolf was a teen-ager tagging along on an errand with his mom when William Effler offered him an after-school job in his store. He took it and 25 years later, Wolf is buying the business. Wolf said his first concern is reassuring longtime Effler’s customers that the 81- year-old business will remain virtually unchanged. “So many people think the store is closing,” Wolf said. “We’ll continue the same traditions and merchandise they’ve come to expect.” That is good news to Sarah Pockras. The Springfield Township woman said she’s been coming to Effler’s for 40 years. “I thought it was closing,” she said while browsing the jewelry cases. “I’m so relieved. I’ll still shop here and I’m thrilled that Jim is taking over.” She’s also relieved to learn that the antique shop above the store, owned by Dorothy Effler , is staying. Wolf and his wife, Laura, said buying the business has been a dream of theirs as well as a way of life. It also means Effler’s will remain a family concern. Laura is William Effler’s niece and met Wolf when she came to work for her uncle. While James Wolf Jewelers will replace the Effler name here, it will remain on the store Effler’s daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Mark Andrus, opened in the Rookwood Pavilion. “We will be independent of one another,” Wolf said, “but be similar in merchandise. We will continue offering the same gift items and collectibles, as well as jewelry and service.” As a teen-ager, Wolf said he became so interested in the jewelry business he decided to pursue it as a career when he graduated from Mt. Healthy High School in 1978. He Has degrees in geology from Miami University and the Gemology Institute of America, he said. Wolf’s ownership is official March 1, [2001]. That’s the date the former after- school job becomes a dream come true. This article appeared in the Hilltop Press on February 14, 2001 and was written by Heidi Fallon. |
